The Girl from the House with Bats in the Walls.

My name is Alana Medel (she/her). I was born and raised in Juneau Alaska, my continued home, on the rich lands of the Lingít Aaní people.

In 2006, I graduated from the University of Victoria British Columbia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from their Visual Arts program in painting and a minor in film studies.

In the years since, I have continued to be a creator; a painter, illustrator, crafter, doll maker, clothing screenprint designer and co-owner of Rag Doll Boutique 2006-2008, co-gallery owner and curator of Figment Contemporary Gallery and Gifts 2001-2012, and now a mother of two.

My passion to create and express myself through art has always brought me back to paint. I have been a painter since I was handed pigment to manipulate with my fingers. However, as is the way of contemporary creation, I am never tied to one medium. I incorporate elements of craft and materials within my work. I am influenced by my favorite pop-culture contributions: storytelling, children’s book and fairy tale illustrations, music, film (especially experimental and horror genre), and the visual arts of the post modern and contemporary eras.

I would love to hear from you!
