BREATHE

Alana Medel

This collection has been created over the past several years as humans have navigated the ramifications and collective experience of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a reflection on health, my lifelong diagnosis of chronic asthma, my drive to be an artist, and the physical limitations of my body.

Gouache is my preferred medium for painting. The paint, though reminiscent of watercolor, is heavy and the pigment thick. The works use borders to isolate the subject, an additional measure of confinement beyond the frames and layering.

The work contain images of lungs, toxic plants, choking vines, heavy crowns, protective circles, constricting snakes and bats. They speak to themes of confinement, isolation, femininity, domesticity, breath, life, importance, biology, biological betrayal, and fear. The incorporation of craft and needlework draws from the traditional artistic spaces to which the feminine was designated, as well as the reality of where many humans turned for purpose when experiencing extended lock-downs and periods of seclusion.
